about

Beyond binarism

The musical notes you listen in this 4 hour long piano album are not random, but also they are not pre-written on the score. They are the result of the triggering of PianoTeq by MIDI messages sent out from the SuperCollider, a music programming language, which specify which keys to be struck, but the source is the value at any given moment of a fast oscillating sawtooth wave. This means that the movement of these notes is determined simply by the time interval between the moments when the keys are struck, without any notion of musical scale or harmony. Apart from a minimum of randomness, such as the dynamics at which the keys are struck, this music is entirely deterministic. Is it a composition or an improvisation? I am frustrating that there is no appropriate term to describe the middle ground between 'composition' and 'improvisation'. Is there not any gradation between these poles? Even though all the notes are placed algorithmically, multiple parameters are adjusted to ensure that their behaviour is optimal, by 'composer'. Can this be said as automatism?
